New Zealand, known in Māori as Aotearoa, is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean and part of Polynesia. It’s composed of two main landmasses—the North and South Islands—and over 700 smaller islands. The country is notable for its remote location, over 1,000 miles southeast of Australia, its nearest neighbor.

The capital city is Wellington, while Auckland is the largest urban area. New Zealand’s landscapes are famously diverse, featuring active volcanoes, deep glacier lakes, verdant valleys, and snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps on the South Island.i

New Zealand has a parliamentary democracy and is a constitutional monarchy, with the British monarch represented by a Governor-General. The current Prime Minister is Christopher Luxon.

The nation has a rich indigenous Māori culture and a history of British colonization. It’s known for its environmental preservation efforts and stunning natural beauty, which makes it a popular location for filming movies.
